Welcome to the Chamber of Commerce of Inglis & Yankeetown
At the mouth of the Withlacoochee River On Florida’s Nature Coast |
| |
| The
Withlacoochee Gulf area is one of Florida’s unspoiled areas offering
unlimited outdoor recreation and the promise of a quiet unhurried
life. Inglis and Yankeetown hug the banks of the Withlacoochee River,
a tidal river, designated as a federally navigable waterway and an
“Outstanding Florida Waterway”. The name Withlacoochee translates as
“little great river” or “little river runs deep” and run it does.
Down to the Gulf of Mexico past innumerable side creeks, sloughs and
islands that are with few exceptions designated boundary areas to
protect the abundance of Indian artifacts and mounds, native plants,
wildlife and birds. |

|
| |
| We are
“Old Florida” at its finest…a paradise for sportsman and
environmentalists. With homes and businesses nestled among huge oaks and
cedar, the area has retained the natural beauty that first attracted
visitors in the 1800’s. With an average temperature of 78 degrees, the
weather is pleasant year round. It is a rare day that the sun doesn't
shine. |
| |
 |
Inglis
and Yankeetown is a stop on the Florida birding trail due to the
wealth and diversity of our year round and migratory bird life.
Swallowtail Kites, Bald Eagles, Hawks, Wood Storks, Ospreys, Roseate
Spoonbills and a multitude of varied Herons, Egrets, and shoreline
birds abound. |
|
If you travel to “The end of the road” (Hwy 40 West at the Gulf) back
in 1961 Elvis Presley made the movie “Follow that dream” a lot of the
movie was filmed at the bridge that goes over bird creek, continue to
the end to see one of our magnificent sunsets. |
|
| |
| Inglis and
Yankeetown we think still holds the hidden treasures, you need to raise
your children, live comfortably, work, relax or retire here. With our
rural setting, we are still close to large towns but, you can leave them
there and return to nature. With an introduction of a proposed new power
plant and the extension of the Suncoast Parkway phase 2, these will only
benefit our area in years to come. |
